Avery Wild (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in photo-based media and performance. Hailing from Maine and now residing in Syracuse, New York, their work often takes the form of staged self-portraits and still life. Their most recent project entitled We Were Flames Like Stars incorporates photos and objects sent to them by their mother into a playful call-and-response with their own crafted images, navigating the complexities of parental relationships at the brink of adulthood, sentimentality and preservation, and non-verbal communication.
Avery is the recipient of numerous academic and artistic awards, including the Kodak Photography Prize (2024), Marcia P. Bailey Scholarship for Artistic Excellence (2019) and Sidney Thomas Prize in Art Historical Writing (2023). We Were Flames Like Stars was featured in an exhibition held in collaboration with their fellow undergraduate students for the completion of their BFA in Art Photography in May 2024.
